Aiona unveils plan to improve Hawaii schools

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - If elected governor Republican candidate James "Duke" Aiona says he'll order an independent audit of the Department of Education (DOE). That's the cornerstone of the education plan he unveiled today while surrounded by teachers and principals. He would also push to give principals the ability to hire and fire staff and he would propose legislation to make sure 90 cents out of every dollar actually makes it to the schools.

"I know that we still have teachers digging into their own pockets, we have principals digging into their own pockets, we have students out there that don't have textbooks" said Aiona.

Aiona says as governor he would follow up the audit with a restructuring of the DOE. He also supports charter schools and home schooling. Additionally he wants to create magnet schools and expand pre-kindergarten classes.
