HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - UPDATE: Police arrested Less Schabel Sr. on Saturday July 17.
June 10, 2007. A 59-year-old man and his son went to their Ewa Beach work site to check on a container that had been broken into a day earlier.
"So all their welding tools, construction material, is just locked up for the night so the workers can go in the morning and grab their stuff for the site" said Sgt. Kim Buffett of Crimestoppers.
They noticed the container door was open, with a van parked nearby.
"The complainant gets out of his vehicle, goes into the container, sees a male and he's got welding glasses on and tools in his hands. He notices the complainant and charges him, strikes him, before jumping into his van and fleeing."
Less than 20 minutes later police stopped a van for going the wrong way on Fort Weaver Road and running a red light. The driver, Less Schnabel Sr. was identified as the man involved in the earlier robbery.
"He is arrested for robbery in the second degree, promoting dangerous drugs in the third degree, and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. So while he was being searched for the robbery, or for the arrest, they found drugs on his person" said Buffett.
"He does have 19 prior convictions and they're for burglaries, thefts, contempts. He hangs out in the Waianae area."
If the name sounds familiar, that's because his son, Less Schnabel Jr. was sentenced to 20 years in prison for killing a visitor with a punch to the head in 2007.
