HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Next week, Hawaii will mark one year of extreme drought and it looks like there's no relief in sight. Drought conditions in Hawaii are the worst in the US and the National Weather Service says it may be October before the islands get any significant rainfall.

So far, the South Kohala District on the island of Hawaii has been the hardest hit.

"On the Big Island Kona coffee has been suffering quite a bit, livestock farmers have been really forced to augment their operations as far as hauling water, hauling feed, it has big impacts on the bottom line" said Kevin Kodama, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service.

Kodama says a new drought report will be released next week, and the Kau District on the Big Island may join South Kohala in the category of exceptional drought, which is the driest designation available.
