Body found off Big Island believed to be missing opihi picker

Joseph Pacheco Joseph Pacheco

HILO, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - A sad ending to the search for a missing opihi picker on the Big Island. Friday morning, crews recovered what is believed to be the body of 41-year-old Joseph Pacheco Jr. one mile north of Papai Bay.

Pacheco went opihi picking late Tuesday and never returned. The body hasn't been identified and is still awaiting an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Fire department crews found Pacheco's dog and backpack about a mile south of where he was last seen, on Shipman Estates Beach. Divers had to be pulled out of the water Wednesday morning after two tiger sharks and a six-foot hammerhead shark were spotted in the area.
