Kauai County announces furlough plan

LIHUE, Kauai (HawaiiNewsNow) - Kauai County has released its furlough calendar. Similar to other county plans, Kauai's firefighters and police officers will not be subject to the two-day per month unpaid days off. However, Hawaii Government Employees Association members of the Police Department and the Fire Department's administrative offices will be closed on furlough days.

Furloughs go into effect on July 1.

The county did try to schedule only one unpaid day per pay period, as much as possible. Other offices will stagger furlough schedules to avoid any closings, such as refuse pick up, transfer stations, and golf and beach park maintenance crews, but it will mean certain offices will be closed twice a month.

That includes:

  • Civil Defense Agency
  • Department of Finance's driver's license, motor vehicles, and real property divisions and all others.
  • Department of Parks and Recreation
  • Department of Public Works
  • Office of the County Attorney
  • Office of the Mayor
  • Planning Department
  • Transportation Agency

Note:  The scheduled furloughs will apply to the administrative offices and almost all staff within these departments/agencies.  However, a limited number of programs within a few departments will use alternate scheduled furlough days to minimize disruption of their unique public services.
