Local connection: Measuring the Census

The Census Bureau has released new information about Hawaii, measuring our population make-up recently. One in five of us are over the age of 65. More than half of us are over 37. One in five Hawaii residents are at least part Hawaiian or other Pacific islander. Half are at least part Asian. The all-white population is now 30% statewide. Or is it?

Census enumerators reported they had trouble getting responses from communities known to have a high proportion of Native Hawaiians. What if suspicion about the survey skewed the numbers? And what about all those people who said they're Caucasian? Research has shown that many Americans who think they're entirely Caucasian are part Native American. Surveys are fascinating, but even with the Census, it's good to keep in mind that they might not be dead-on.
