KAANAPALI, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Maui Fire Department and the US Coast Guard have called off the search for 54-year old Tina Fox, the Colorado Springs woman who was swept away while snorkeling with her husband off west Maui's Black Rock Point. Rescuers say they covered more than 300 square nautical miles in four days of searching.
Fox was last seen swimming about 150 yards off Black Rock around 3:00 PM Thursday. Coast Guard helicopters and ships, Maui police and fire crews as well as volunteer snorkelers and divers all searched for her from the time she was reported missing until the search was called off.
Fox and her husband travel to Maui every year. Right now the family is devastated.
"He said he turned and waved at my mom, then turned around again and she was gone. We are in shock, it's extremely sudden" Fox's daughter Christie said.
"Unless evidence appears regarding the whereabouts of Ms. Fox, she is presumed deceased. The family appreciates all of the efforts put into the search for Tina and remains hopeful that Tina may yet be found" her family said in a statement.
The family is asking for privacy at this time.
