HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Since their debut two years ago, Kûpaoa was dubbed the Most Promising Artist at the 2009 Nâ Hôkû Hanohano Awards. Now they are proving they deserve the award with the release of their second album, English Rose. Amy Kalili has more.
Ua nui ka maikaʻi o ka CD mua ʻo Pili i ke ao, me kâ lâua mau mele nahenahe i haku ai a ʻoki leo ai. Ua makemake naʻe lâua e puka mai he CD i ʻeleu iki mai ke ʻano o nâ mele≥
Their first CD, Pili i ke Ao, was full of beautiful, soothing Hawaiian songs. But they wanted to change things up a bit.
He mau mele malie ma ka CD mua, akâ i ka manawa e hoʻokani ai i nâ mele, ʻaʻole hiki ke hoʻokani i nâ mele mâlie no ka pô holoʻôkoʻa. He pono i kekahi mau mele ʻeu a me ka wiki.
We love those mele but needed some lively additions to our performances.
Ma kâ Kûpaoa pâ sçdç ʻelua ʻo English Rose, ʻoi aku ka ʻeleu o nâ mele a kûpono no ka hula kekahi. E like me kçia mele ʻo Sweet ʻApapane.
Kûpaoa's second album English Rose boasts a bit more upbeat and hula-happy songs like Sweet ʻApapane.
We're trying to contribute to growing the base of Hawaiian music and so we're trying to work with the resources that we have, the teachers that we have become friends, the hula dancers that we have and the very talented colleagues of ours, in putting out quality Hawaiian music.
He ʻiʻini e mau ka ulu o nâ mele Hawaiʻi a hana like ana mâua me nâ hoa mâkaukau ma kçia ʻimi ʻoi kelakela ʻana.
He aloha maoli ko lâua no ka hula a kiʻi ana lâua i ia pilina kûlohelohe ma waena o ke mele Hawaiʻi a me ka hula.
They are really embracing the relationship between music and hula.
Hula is important for us because we feel like it's another vessel that makes our music more accessible to as many audiences as possible.
He pôʻaiapili ka hula e ʻume ʻia ai ka poʻe i kâ kâkou papahana puolo.
Sometimes for the people who don't understand ʻôlelo Hawaiʻi they need the expression and the motion to tell the story for you.
