Scholarships available for first-time Hawaii degree-seekers

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Hawaii charitable organization is offering scholarships to Hawaii residents interested in earning a vocational degree, but the deadline is approaching fast. First-time degree seekers who intend to begin working after earning the degree are eligible.

Qualifying vocational programs may include, but are not limited to fields such as culinary arts, practical nursing, auto repair, cosmetology, and computer graphics. The scholarship money can be used toward tuition, books and fees for up to four semesters at private institutions or through the University of Hawaii system .

"These scholarships are not just for recent high school graduates seeking vocational training. People who are interested in re-training for future employment are also eligible to apply" said Rona Kekauoha, scholarships officer at the Hawaii Community Foundation.

Applications are still being accepted for the 2010-2011 school year. The deadline for applying is July 1. For information visit the Hawaii Community Foundation website.
