WAIPAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Flames broke out in a portable classroom in the rear of Waipahu Intermediate School at just after 12:30 AM Friday. When firefighters arrived the wooden structure was gutted. They were able to keep the flames from spreading to other portables nearby.
"At first it looked like it was coming out of a window or something, the flame was going like this. And I don't know if they opened the door or something, but it just went woosh! And it just went up and it was just huge" said Waipahu Neighborhood Board Chair Chuck Wheatley.
Investigators estimate the damage at $160,000 to the building and $400,000 to its contents. The cause of the fire is also under investigation.
