OCEAN VIEW, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - A wildfire destroyed two homes on the Big Island Thursday. Families in Ocean View watched in horror as the flames ripped through their neighborhood. The Ocean View Community Association said two homes and a greenhouse were destroyed.

The fire broke out about 3:00 PM and grew quickly, covering about 80 acres. That's when things got worse. The fire jumped a road. Families near Tiki Drive were quickly evacuated.

"As of 7:20 (Thursday) evening we are able to call the fire contained. We have it contained within those two blocks of the subdivision still… units will remain on scene throughout the night, the battalion chief has completed his perimeter check and feels things have improved to where we can allow residents home and he is doing that presently. So we are allowing those residents who were affected by the fire back into their homes" said Hawaii County Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira.

Firefighters continued to douse hot spots throughout the day Friday. Investigators say that an unattended barbecue appears to be the cause.
