HILO, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) – Circuit Court Judge Elizabeth Strance sentenced 25-year-old Jon Christian Liko Asing to10 years in prison for the death of Thomas Keliinohomoku. Asing pleaded guilty to negligent homicide, negligent injury, reckless endangering and driving under the influence.
The sentence was handed down for an April 2008 accident in which prosecutors said that Asing was the driver of truck that was trying to run another truck off the road. Asing's truck flipped over, ejecting Keliinohomoku and another man who was riding in the truck's bed.
Asing, who was not wearing a seat belt, was also ejected. Keliinohomoku died from his injuries at Kona Community Hospital about three hours after the accident. The occupants of the truck Asing was pursuing were not hurt. The chase began after a fight at a Kona gas station.
The Hawaii State Parole Board will determine the minimum amount of time Asing must serve before he is considered for parole.
