Annual LGBT parade has political meaning this year

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender community took part in a 20-year old tradition in Waikiki Saturday, but their focus is on the future.

It was the annual Honolulu LGBT pride parade and celebration.

The theme this year is "Justice Means Equality."

Organizers say the event is a lot of fun, but they also say it has political meaning as they await Governor Lingle's decision on a bill that would grant marriage rights to same-sex couples.

"Our hopes are that she does sign it into law, seeing every here today, it's not just a gay issue, it's a civil rights issue", said Pride Parade Committee member Michael Golojuch, Jr.

Parade organizers note that they had several politicians at the parade Saturday, including gubernatorial candidate Neil Abercrombie.

They say their backing is getting stronger, but they still face strong opposition from many groups and prominent politicians who say marriage rights should only go to traditional heterosexual couples.
