Big Island boy dies in golf cart accident

HILO, Hawaii (AP) - Big Island police report a 14-year-old boy has died of injuries received when he fell from a golf cart.  They say Bronson D. Derego of Waimea died Thursday at The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu.

According to police, Derego was in the back of the golf cart Monday when a 15-year-old girl driving it pulled into a private driveway from Mana Road. He fell off and struck the pavement. Derego was taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital before being transferred to Queen's.

The girl and two other passengers weren't injured. Police are conducting a negligent homicide investigation. An autopsy was ordered to determine the cause of death.
