Moped rider dies in Puna crash

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) – A 57-year-old Mountain View man is dead after the moped he was riding was struck by a pick-up truck on Highway 11 Wednesday afternoon. Police say the moped rider was traveling north on the shoulder of the highway when he pulled out into the main northbound lane and the truck collided with him.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending positive identification. He was not wearing a helmet. The driver of the truck, a 59-year-old Glenwood man, was not injured.

The crash was reported at 2:40 PM Wednesday. It happened near the Mountain View Post Office between mile marker 14 and 15 on Highway 11, near the intersection with Psyzk Road.

It is unknown at this time if speed, alcohol or drugs were involved in this crash. Police have initiated a negligent homicide investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
