Census worker arrested for trespassing

HILO, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - On the Big Island a federal census worker was arrested in the Puna area for suspected trespassing. Federal court documents filed Thursday say Russell Haas was told to leave a Hawaiian Acres property in march by an off-duty police officer.

After a verbal confrontation with two other police officers outside the gate, Haas was arrested. The federal government says the state can't prosecute, because Haas was performing federal duties.

The next court appearance is set for June 17th.
