KUNIA (HawaiiNewsNow) – The Honolulu medical examiner's office has identified a man who died after a fiery crash on the H-1 Tuesday evening. 33-year-old David Roberts of Waianae was critically injured when the pickup truck he was driving flipped over and caught fire. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. His passenger, a 33-year-old Waianae woman was taken to the hospital in serious condition.
The accident happened in the east-bound lanes near the Kunia off-ramp just after 6:00 PM Tuesday. Police say the truck was heading east bound on H-1 at a high rate of speed when it veered right and struck a grass embankment. The truck overturned, ejecting Roberts. Fire crews freed the woman from inside the truck before the vehicle caught fire.
The accident caused a major traffic jam as police shut down all lanes to investigate the accident. The freeway was reopened just before 9:00 PM.
Neither Roberts nor his passenger were wearing seat belts. It is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
