Power back on in Kakaako after reports of underground explosion

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) –290 Hawaiian Electric customers were without power for about 90 minutes Tuesday afternoon in Kakaako. The outage occurred along Kapiolani Boulevard in the vicinity of the Neal Blaisdell Center. The outage was reported just before 1:00 PM.

Initial reports indicate there was an explosion underground, although there are no reports of injuries. Hawaiian Electric crews vented a manhole at the corner of Kapiolani and Kamakee. Power was fully restored to all customers around 4:45 PM.

The cause of the outage was described by power company officials as underground cable problems.
