Former UH prof accused of arson found not guilty by reason of insanity

David Bleecker David Bleecker

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A University of Hawaii math professor accused of setting fire to his office was acquitted of arson charges Monday afternoon. Circuit Judge Richard Perkins found  62-year-old David Bleecker not guilty by reason of insanity. The judge also found that Bleecker would not be responsible for monetary damages stemming from the incident.

On Thursday, mental health experts who examined Bleecker testified that his bipolar disorder and cognitive disorder "substantially impaired his ability to control his behavior."

In June of last year, investigators said Bleecker set fire to the door of his office at UH Manoa. The fire was quickly extinguished and no one was injured.

He is now undergoing treatment at the Hawaii State Hospital in Kaneohe. A hearing was set for August 26th to determine if Bleecker is a danger to the community.

Bleecker was relieved of his teaching duties prior to the trial. He worked at the university for more than 35 years.
