HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii troops headed to Afghanistan took part in a special ceremony Monday. The one-year deployment involves about 200 soldiers from the 307th Integrated Theater Signal Battalion. They're part of President Obama's troop surge. The 307th will be installing communications systems.

Meanwhile, the soldiers' families can use a new room for video teleconferences and internet access at the Helemano Military Reservation.

"We took the last 90 days and did some intense training, both on the latest equipment, the latest communications equipment, as well as our weapons systems," Commander Jacqueline Brown said.

"The yellow ribbon room is a huge morale booster for any soldier, any spouse, family member just because you always have that way of communicating with your loved one," Spec. Timothy Flowers said.

This is the 307th's first combat deployment since the Vietnam War. The troops will leave during the next two weeks.
