HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - With clients like Nâ Leo Pilimehana and Yoza, these local producers are making a name for themselves. Amy Kalili introduces us to Shawn Pimental and Michael Grande of Studio Ala Moana.
Ke hele nei kçia he 20 makahiki o ko Shawn me Michael kamaʻâina kekahi i kekahi. Ma hope o ka hoʻokani ʻana no kekahi mau makahiki, ke komo nei i ka ʻaoʻao hoʻopuka i kçia manawa.
Shawn and Michael have known each other for over 20 years. After playing music for years, they're now producing.
We've played together with Fiji and Robi and a whole bunch of people.
Co-owner, Studio Ala Moana Ua hoʻokani me Fiji, Robi, a pçlâ aku.
Paʻahana mau nô ia hale ʻoki leo ʻo Studio Ala Moana ma nâ ʻano mea puolo e like hoʻi me kahi lâlâ o ka kalapu hîmeni ʻo Nâ Leo, ʻo Lehua Kalima nô hoʻi.
Studio Ala Moana is always buzzing with talent, like Nâ Leo's own Lehua Kalima.
Working with Lehua is definitely different from working with Nâ Leo, because as a solo artist her message and her lyrics are of herself.
ʻOkoʻa ʻo Lehua ma ka pâkahi mai ka hui ʻo Nâ Leo. Loaʻa kona ʻano ponoʻî nô.
Ke paʻu nei ʻo Lehua ma kçia sçdç leo kûkahi
Lehua is working on her solo debut album with back-up from her producers.
ʻOiai nui ʻino ka paʻahana o kçia mau mea hoʻopuka pâhana puolo, mau nô naʻe ka paʻa o ka mole kumu i pili i ke aloha i ka puolo.
The local music scene seems to keep these producers busy, but for them at the end of the day it's still about music.
It's not just about making CDs and putting them on the shelf. It's not just about playing at Waikîkî Shell or getting your music on the radio over here, you know. There's a broad spectrum of fans out there that want to hear new music and a lot of people haven't heard music from Hawaiʻi.
ʻAʻole pili i ka hoʻopuka sçdç, hoʻokani ma Waikikî, a hoʻolele ma Hawaiʻi wale nô. Nui ka hoihoi o ko waho i kâ kâkou.
ʻO kekahi mea puolo kalena e laha ana kona kalena a mâkaukau, kapa wale ʻia ʻo ia ʻo Yoza.
The next promising local artist on Shawn's client list goes merely by Yoza.
The thing that he does that is so awesome is that he doesn't try to make the artist that he's working with no matter who he's working with be someone that he wants them to be.
ʻO ka maikaʻi ona, ʻaʻole ʻo ia ʻimi i ka hoʻololi a kû ka mea puolo i kona ʻano.
He tries to get the artist to express who they are so he can understand who they are and then build on that.
ʻImi ʻo ia i ke ahuwale mai o ko ka mea puolo ʻano ʻoiaʻiʻo nô.
No ka ʻike hou aku no kâ lâua hana me nâ mea puolo e hana ana me lâua, e kipa aku i ka ʻaoʻao puke alo ʻo Studio Ala Moana.
