HAGATNA, Guam (AP) - The US Coast Guard reports 11 people aboard a missing outrigger sailing canoe have been found safe and sound. Officials said Friday that the canoe that left Guam on May 13, overshot its destination of Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia and wound up in Palau. Arrangements were being made to continue on to Yap.
The canoe was reported missing this week after failing to complete the 500-mile voyage to Yap. It was last seen Sunday, while an accompanying canoe arrived Monday.
The search for the overdue canoe was centered about 250 miles southwest of Guam over a region covering 60,000 square miles. The effort included a Coast Guard aircraft from Hawaii and a Coast Guard cutter.
