HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A woman convicted of neglecting her mother, with deadly results, went to jail Wednesday. Nena Lopez was sentenced to 30 days in prison and ten years probation.

50-year-old Lopez pleaded guilty to causing the death of her 79 year old mother. Ines Lopez died in 2006 with severe bed sores. She had been bedridden for three years.

Prosecutors say the certified nurse's aide failed to provide her mother with basic care. In court Wednesday, Lopez said she never meant to hurt her.

"I took good care of my mom. I didn't do anything wrong to anybody else, especially my mom. I didn't hurt; I didn't mean to hurt my mom."

"I think in your heart, you still don't think you did anything wrong. But that's between you and whoever. I'm here to tell you did something very wrong" said Circuit Court Judge Glenn Kim.

"You ultimately pled guilty, thereby taking responsibility for your mother's death. I hope your daughters treat you better than you treated your mother."

Lopez's attorneys say she was simply overwhelmed by the 24-hour care and did the best she could. Lopez had initially asked to only serve her time during weekends so she could continue to take care of her three daughters. That was denied, and her sentence started immediately.
