WAIALAE IKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A classroom becomes a crime scene, and now one student is hospitalized and another faces attempted murder charges.

The boys are teammates on the Kalani High School swim team with no known violence between them, until Tuesday morning.

Witnesses and students say the two were friends, but they say one turned on the other because they were allegedly fighting over a girl.

"He's just nice. He never did anything bad to anyone," said Megan Rego, the victim's classmate.

Students at Kalani High School say it's out of character.

"The guy who stabbed the other person was actually a really nice person. My teacher said that he's a really good student and gets really good grades and I guess he just snapped," said Rockwell Knight, a student.

Honolulu police say the violence broke out just before 9:00 a.m. at a math class in the E building that the suspect and victim had together.

The two are juniors, both minors, so their identities cannot be revealed.

"A 17-year-old student entered the classroom at Kalani High School and stabbed another 16-year-old student multiple times," said Capt. Richard Robinson, of the Honolulu Police Department.

Investigators say the 17-year-old used a large knife.

Witnesses say there was no argument before the stabbing. They say the suspect simply stood up, and allegedly slashed the victim.

They say a girl in class tried to tell him to stop, the suspect allegedly stopped on his own, walked out, and turned himself in to the office.

The victim was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition.

"The safety and health of our students is of utmost priority so we immediately went into lock down. Students were detained in all their classes," said Gerald Teramae, Principal of Kalani High School.

"It was kind of shocking because Kalani isn't really that kind of school. You don't really hear that much stuff. There's not that many fights either," said Knight.

Teramae says this is an isolated incident.

The school allowed concerned parents to take their kids home early.

Counselors will be on hand on Wednesday.
