KAIMUKI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A grassroots effort got underway to save historic buildings and homes in East Oahu.
One of their main focuses is the Queen Theater on Waialae Avenue. It's considered one of the most endangered historic sites in the state.
It's been closed for more than 20 years and some say it's become a hazard and a major eye-sore.
"The Friends of the Queen Theater" say they haven't been able to meet with the property owner. They hope to save what many call the anchor to the Kaimuki business district.
"I know it's a much-loved part of the community and it would be great if there was some way it could be enjoyed by people again" said volunteer Candace Strong.
The Queen Theater is on the National Register of Historic Places, but like all buildings and homes in this list, it still may be torn down.
