HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The last known specimen of a rare wild orchid on Kauai has disappeared. The Center for Plant Conservation says the Platanthera holochila, which lived for several years in the Alakai Swamp is thought to have died.

Only 35 of the Hawaiian orchids are still living in the wild on Molokai and Maui, but there is hope for a resurgence.

Illinois college students are growing seedlings in their lab and are hoping to re-plant about 100 of them on Kauai next year.
