HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - More than 2,000 men and women graduated from UH Manoa over the weekend, plus hundreds more from two-year campuses. This week, Hawaii Pacific University will hold its commencement for some 900 students, Wednesday at the Waikiki Shell. That's 3,000 people thrown onto the job market. This happened in the nineties and led to brain drain. This time it's hard to say because unemployment is even higher in California, Nevada and Arizona.
The UH School of Medicine graduated 58 new physicians over the weekend, and 12 of them are Native Hawaiians. These new doctors will continue training in their chosen specialities, with 15 going into the Hawaii residency program. By population Hawaii is short hundreds of doctors, and a quarter of the doctors we have are old enough to retire.
The 32nd annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk, on five islands, raised $900,000 this year. Maui raised more than Oahu with fewer than half the walkers.
John Dailey is the new director of sales for the Pacific Beach Hotel. The post also covers a sister property, the Pagoda. If you haven't been there lately, yes, they still have the koi ponds.
