HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Native Hawaiian films and filmmakers continue to be featured at the Doris Duke Theatre as part of the month-long ʻÔiwi Film Festival. Amy Kalili introduces the Joy brothers, filmmakers from Maui whose short film Kekohi opens tonight.

Our whole life was in filmmaking. When we were young, all we did was watch movies and watch movies.

The brothers produced and directed Kekohi, an action-adventure film.

Which is about a runner in the old Hawaiian days in the 1700s. He delivers messages from aliʻi to aliʻi. In this particular story he is pursued by two assassins trying to stop him.

ʻO Kekohi ka moʻolelo o kahi kûkini aliʻi e aʻo mâlie ana i ka waiwai o kona kuleana hou.

Kekohi tells the story of a messenger who slowly learns the value of kuleana.

They had so much importance in their job. They were the communicators and the survival of a lot of villages and families.

The Joy brothers realize their unique advantage in telling Hawaiʻi's stories.

The connection that we have to our past is very important, that tells a story that no one else can explain but us as indigenous people.
