Officials probing death of Hawaiian monk seal off Kauai

LIHUE, Kauai (AP) - It could take months to determine what caused the death of a Hawaiian monk seal. Results are pending of a necropsy performed after the juvenile female was found dead May 6 at Glass Beach.

Hawaiian Monk Seal Recovery Coordinator Jeff Walters speculates the seal was likely born on Niihau and swam to Kauai. The seal was between one and two years old.

He says the death will have a "significant impact to the reproductive future" of endangered monk seals in the main Hawaiian Islands.

Kauai Monk Seal Watch Program Projects Coordinator Timothy Robinson called the death of the young female "tragic." Fewer than 1,100 Hawaiian monk seals are estimated to live throughout the islands.
