KANEOHE (HawaiiNewsNow) – A heartbreaking goodbye for hundreds of families at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. Members of the 3rd battalion 3rd Marine Regiment deployed Friday morning.

This is the unit's fifth deployment, and its second to Afghanistan, but for two-thirds of the Marines and sailors it's their first experience dealing with the insurgency overseas.

"Nervousness. Anxiousness. This is my first time, so don't know what to expect" said Cpl. Ramon Anthony Ogo.

"As soon as you see the bus roll off, you start counting the weeks down. We go by weeks are the best way to go, because months are daunting and days are too many, but weeks are the way to count down" said Lindsie Brewer.

"We're going to follow and assume all the good things the 1st battalion 3rd Marines, the lava dogs, have done in advance, they're returning and we're replacing them" said battalion commander Lt. Col. Jeff Holt.

This is the first of four groups heading up to battle insurgency in Afghanistan. The Marines and sailors they are replacing will be returning to Hawaii sometime in June.
