HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii hotels mostly ran more than a third empty as they prepared for busier business after schools let out.

Occupancy for May 2-8 was closer to half full on Kauai and the Big Island, but room rates, while low compared to most other times of the year, were not much lower than last year, Hospitality Advisors LLC reported Friday.

In the following list, change from the same time last year is in parenthesis:

  • Oahu 69% (-1 percentage point). Average room rate: $151 (same).
  • Maui 63% (-8 points). Rate: $194 (-6%).
  • Kauai 54% (-2 points). Rate: $169 (-8%).
  • Hawaii 50% (+5 points). Rate: $178 (+8%),

Nationwide, hotel occupancy was 57%, with rates of 56% in Orlando and 64% in both Los Angeles and San Diego, Smith Travel Research LLC reported.

Earlier this week, Hospitality Advisors reported that Hawaii revpar - revenue per available room - rose in March for the first time in two years, but said the increases were seen only on Oahu and Maui, not on Kauai and the Big Island.
