Howzit Howard: Property Tax Increase

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Budget Chairman Nestor Garcia says he's still trying to find a way to eliminate or reduce the increase, but only one more June 9 city council vote remains to make it law. The property tax increase is limited to non-occupants, local landlords on residences they don't live in themselves and residences owned by people who live outside the state. On the Big Island, Mayor Billy Kenoi is also proposing a tax hike for non-resident homeowners.

The state employees retirement system is watching its investments regain value. ERS says its pension fun rose 3.3 percent in the first quarter. That's more than $300 million in recaptured wealth.

The Army has awarded about $3 million to develop therapies for drug-resistant bacteria that could threaten Americans in the battlefield. The money goes to Synedgen, with a lab in California and drug-making facility here on Oahu.

Aloha Petroleum says Shell stations will stay Shell stations though Aloha is acquiring the local ones.

Hilton Grand Vacations Club, the timeshare end of the Hilton Hawaiian Village, has hired Henry Perfez as general manager. He had been area GM for Aqua Hotels & Resorts and worked for Outrigger Guam before that.
