HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui County realtors, reporting last, said there were more housing sales in April than a year ago, with the median price down 11 percent. But there were three times more condo sales despite higher prices. In each county it appears local demand is driving the higher sales volume, not investors from off-island. More locals are buying, investors are still waiting.
Territorial Savings posted a first quarter of just under one and half million, down half from last year. It would have been twice as much but Territorial took a two-million charge on trust-preferred securities.
The National Marine Fisheries Service has awarded a quarter-million dollar grant to Kona Blue, the company that grows Hawaiian Yellowtail in cages off the coast at Kona Airport. The money is to research alternative protein sources for aquaculture. This summer they'll start testing renewable feeds for the fish.
Simon Development, largest U.S. owner of malls, has withdrawn its offer to acquire the next-biggest rival general growth. Simon tried lowballing, eventually doubling its first offer, but pulled out when the general growth bankruptcy judge set conditions to raise the price still further.
