Motorcyclist killed in Nimitz Highway crash identified

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The medical examiner's office has identified the man killed Sunday afternoon in a crash near the Honolulu International Airport. 52-year-old Richard J. Ellis died from multiple internal injuries after the motorcycle he was driving slammed into a van at the intersection of Camp Catlin Drive and Nimitz Highway just after 3:30 in the afternoon.

Traffic investigators say Ellis ran a red light traveling west on Nimitz Highway when he collided with a van turning left from Nimitz onto Camp Catlin. He was thrown from his bike and sustained multiple injuries.

He was taken to Tripler Army Medical Center in extremely critical condition. He was pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital.

The three occupants in the van were not injured. Speed was a factor on the part of the motorcyclist. He was not wearing a helmet. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors.
