Brushfire burning near Maui airport extinguished

SPRECKLESVILLE, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) – A brushfire that started Thursday night near the Kahului airport has been extinguished, fire officials report. Early Friday morning, several nearby residents left their homes as a precaution, but later returned.

Fire officials called in the Air One helicopter to assist with water drops Friday morning. Overnight crews from Goodfellow Brothers, a construction company, removed several large boulders that were blocking fire crews access to the area. Official say that a number of homeless people are camping in the area, and animal control had to be called in to remove a cat in a cage.

About three acres were burned in the blaze. The fire did not impact airport operations. No injuries have been reported and no structures have been damaged.
