HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Big Island man was sentenced to nine months in federal prison for a 2008 car break-in at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, park officials said Thursday. 31-year-old Ashley Kai Larita was also sentenced to three years supervised release and ordered to pay $632 in restitution to the victims.

On New Year's Day 2008 park rangers say Larita broke into a park visitor's rental car at the Kilauea Iki overlook parking lot. An investigation by rangers and a special agent led to his arrest.

"Our park rangers and special agent were unwavering in their investigative efforts that led to the successful prosecution of this case," said Park Superintendent Cindy Orlando. "A purpose of the park is to provide for enjoyment of this wondrous resource by residents and visitors. We have zero tolerance for those who victimize others."

Larita was convicted of felony unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle with intent to commit a crime. The sentence was handed down last month in US District Court.
