Whale carcass washes ashore on Kauai

POIPU, Kauai (HawaiiNewsNow) – Scientists with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) report that a whale carcass washed ashore in front of a Kauai resort. The 20 foot long section was discovered Tuesday morning on the beach at the Hyatt Resort Poipu.

Officials from NOAA, the state and the Hyatt are working to remove it. Scientists are collecting samples of bone and tissue to determine the species of the whale.

It is uncertain if the carcass is the same as one that the US Coast Guard observed Friday in the Kauai channel off Oahu's Kaena point. Tiger sharks were seen feeding on the remains of that whale.
