HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two new bits of information have emerged which both explain the need for consolidation and tell us something about its direction. The Associated Press reports the Bulletin has lost about a hundred million dollars in the past nine years. And the Bulletin publisher Dennis Francis says that combined newsroom like won't be as large as the current Advertiser newsroom. That's the first word of a net reduction in headcount.

Kauai is about to get its first electric bill rate increase since the mid-1990s. The Kauai Island Utility Cooperative says business bills will rise two and a half percent. Households will pay about eight dollars more a month. The Cooperative's biggest cost factor is soaring oil prices.

Holiday Inn is launching a $100 million ad campaign, the biggest hotel brand re-launch ever. Marriott is advertising 15 percent off weekend stays at Courtyard. And Starwood has a new campaign called "Pon Tour with Starwood Preferred Guests."

Wolfgang's Steakhouse in Royal Hawaiian Center says this is national hamburger month. So it's offering a $10 hamburger that includes steak fries, onion rings and drink...lunchtime only.

The surf retailer "Hawaiian Island Creations" opens a new flagship store in Waikiki on May 7th, in the old Burberry space where Beachwalk forks off Kalakaua. I always wondered why we had a Burberry Outlet in Waikiki.
