NEW YORK CITY (HawaiiNewsNow) - A day after a failed car bomb forced evacuations at New York City's Times Square, a Hawaii resident, who's there on vacation, gives his account of what happened.

Sunday, police released pictures of the car bomb.

An image shows just how deadly the situation could've been if it exploded.

The Pathfinder was parked on 45th Street, right in the middle of cars and pedestrians.

Police say it appears the amateur bomb malfunctioned.

That gave officers enough time to evacuate the area and dismantle the device.

The SUV was packed with bomb materials, like propane tanks, gasoline cans, fireworks, and two plastic timers.

Investigators are still trying to find out who planted it.

"Everyone, grab your food up, let's go", a police officer could be heard in a video clip.

Hawaii resident Matt Derby captured this video and says he was grabbing a drink from the McDonald's near Times Square during a vacation when police told customers they needed to evacuate the area.

Derby says it was a frightening experience, knowing what could have happened.

"I wasn't too scared at the moment cause you know the buzz that was going around among everybody in Times Square was that there was a car on fire and then from a car on fire it turned into there's a bomb threat", said Derby by phone from New York.

"Honestly it's a surreal experience as I say", said Derby.

He adds that since he shot the video, news stations have been airing it non-stop, since it is one of the first glimpses of the evacuations in and around Times Square.
