PEARL CITY (HawaiiNewsNow) - From his upstairs office, Joe Manalo checks every corner of his contracting company through security cameras.

"The technology with this equipment surpasses my expectations," he said.

Manalo had the system installed after he was burglarized in March.

"I lost a bunch of welding equipment - just a lot of the everyday tools that we use," he said.

Manalo's company, JMI Contractors, is on the list of what Honolulu police classify as high-profile commercial burglaries.

In recent months, thieves have broken into businesses all over Oahu.

Since March cops have arrested eleven people and charged nine in connection with the crimes.

A barometer of the burglaries may be how busy it is at Cam Security.

The company gets five to ten calls a day from business owners who want to install a system or want an upgrade of alarms and security cameras.

"A system can be viewed on your iPhone, your laptop, your computer. So when the business owner is away he can still have eyes on his business," Asa Ikeda said.

After his shop was hit, Manalo reinforced his doors with metal grates and bolted down his welding machines.

When he leaves for the day he monitors his shop on his home computer.

"You got to do everything you can to just try to protect yourself and your business," he said.

Since the recent run of business burglaries, a lot of businesses see things the same way.
