One killed in fiery Kaimuki crash

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – One person was killed early Monday morning in a violent crash that left the H-1 Freeway eastbound closed for about three- and-a-half hours. It happened just after 2:00 AM near the Koko Head Overpass.

Police say that the 1996 Toyota Camry was traveling at a high rate of speed when it went up the embankment just before the Koko Head overpass and crashed into a light pole and a concrete wall. The car then burst into flames and landed back on the freeway.

Police have yet to identify the victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities say the driver was pinned in the vehicle, and was severely burned. No one else was in the car.

Police continue to investigate the accident. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
