HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Oahu claims rose by about 200. On the Big Island, claims rose at the Kona office but fell in Hilo. Hawaiian Airlines spent a quarter of its revenue on the fuel bill in the first quarter, as jet fuel costs rose 40 percent from last year. Result? Approximate breakeven, a profit of less than a quarter million dollars.

Alaska Airlines plans more flights to Hawaii in the fall. At various times from September to November, Alaska will launch service from Portland to Honolulu and Kona as well as extra service from Seattle to Kona, and now in addition to all that Alaska announced a nonstop from San Diego to Maui starting October 1st.

US Airways, which flies a lot of people to Hawaii from Phoenix, has cut off merger talks with United Airlines. It did so after learning that United is also exploring merger with Continental at the latter's request.
