WASHINGTON (HawaiiNewsNow) – President Obama named US Magistrate Judge Leslie E. Kobayashi to the US District Court for Hawaii, the White House announced Wednesday. If approved by the US Senate, Kobayashi will fill the vacancy created when Chief District Judge Helen Gillmor rose to senior status last year. Kobayashi, 52, has served as Magistrate Judge since 1999.

"Magistrate Judge Kobayashi is an individual of unquestioned character and a sound choice for the federal bench," said Senator Daniel Inouye. "Her experience as an attorney and magistrate judge have shaped her legal perspective and given her an eye for justice. I am confident in her ability to preside over the court with fairness and compassion."

Prior to her appointment as magistrate judge, Kobayashi was an associate attorney, partner and managing partner with the Honolulu firm of Fujiyama, Duffy & Fujiyama.  She also served as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in Honolulu from 1983 to 1984.  She is a 1983 graduate of the Boston College School of Law. She received her BA from Wellesley College in 1979.
