Sex offender sentenced after 15 years on the run

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man who tried to fake his death to avoid serving his sex assault sentence, will not spend any additional time in prison.

Under a plea agreement, Michael Stephens was sentenced to five years for sex assault III, and one year each for two counts of sex assault IV. The time will be served concurrently with a 20-year sentence he is already serving.

Stephens was convicted of sexually assaulting three teenage boys in 1990.

Then, just before he was going to be retried for sexually assaulting a young boy in a Manoa Valley home, prosecutors say he took a boat out to Keehi Lagoon and pretended to commit suicide.

Law enforcement officials later found out, he had applied for a US Passport, and put Stephens on the show "America's Most Wanted".

In 2008, the show received a tip that Stephens owned a business in Mexico. Investigators found the former real estate agent selling time shares in Puerto Vallarta.
