Authorities asking Hawaii residents to conserve water

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii residents and businesses are being asked to conserve water. The Commission on Water Resource Management says by conserving water, mandatory water restrictions could be avoided.

The concern is the dry weather condition with El Nino could lead to a more serious situation as we move into the drier months of the year.

Here are some tips for conserving water:

  • Water your lawn between the hours of 5:00 PM and 9:00 AM to minimize evaporation
  • Repair leaks or broken sprinkler heads
  • Take shorter showers
  • Use a broom instead of water to clean your driveway
  • Turn the water off while brushing teeth or shaving
  • Use the garbage can and not the toilet to dispose of trash
  • Run dishwashers with a full load
  • Wash only full loads of laundry
  • Wash your vehicle with a bucket or use a hose end shutoff nozzle
