Lisa's last-minute tax tips

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - If you haven't finished your taxes yet, you're not alone. But your federal return must be postmarked by midnight to avoid a penalty.

Generally, anyone who held a paying job in 2009 is eligible for the credit, worth up to $400 dollars for singles, $800 dollars for married couples.

It begins to phase out for those with higher incomes.

There's also a credit for retired government workers who haven't used social security.

Experts advise retirees who have government pensions to check if they're eligible.

Also, cash donations to the Haitian relief effort from mid January to the end of February can be claimed on the 2009 tax return, even though they didn't happen until 2010.

And you can always filed an extension.

But that doesn't mean you can delay paying your tax, since you have to pay what you think you owe. Otherwise, you'll be hit with a penalty.
