BEIJING (Hawaii News Now) - Chinese television is reporting 300 people have now been killed in a strong earthquake in the western province.

The 6.9 temblor struck at about 7:49 a.m. Wednesday in the Qinghai Province (about 1:49 p.m. Tuesday Hawaii Time). It was centered about 240 miles southeast of Golmud, which is a town of about 130,000 on the Tibetan plateau.

Two strong aftershocks followed, one measuring 5.8, the other 4.8.

The area is described as being sparsely populated with farmers and herders. But 90% of the mud and wood homes collapsed. Phone lines are down, and Chinese army officers say the road to the airport has been cut off. Soldiers are digging victims out of the rubble by hand.

Chinese news media report 3,000 troops will be sent to the area to help.
