Woman dies in fiery north Kona car accident

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) –51-year-old Jerridee L. Halliwell of  Kamuela died Tuesday afternoon after her car ran off of Highway 180 near Holualoa and burst into flames. The accident happened just before 4:00 PM.

Police say the Halliwell lost control of her 1997 Volkswagen sedan as she was traveling north on Mamalahoa Highway. The car rolled about 50 feet down an embankment and caught fire. Several witnesses attempted to extinguish the fire, but she was trapped inside the vehicle and burned.

Halliwell was taken to Kona Community Hospital where she was pronounced dead just after 7:00 PM. Police closed Highway 180 in both directions for about five hours as they investigated the accident.

It is unknown if speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the accident. Authorities have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
