Flags stolen from veterans center

FOSTER VILLAGE, OAHU (Hawaii News Now) -- Flags are no longer flying in front of an Oahu Veterans Center. It's all because of thieves.

Thursday morning, when workers arrived at the Veterans Center in Foster Village, they found just empty flagpoles.

Some time overnight, someone took down their American and Prisoner of War flags.

The cost of the two flags is just over a hundred dollars. But the significance is so much more.

"On top of that, these bricks right behind me are commemorative bricks that folks put in for honoring their relative or friends servicing their country," said Fred Ballard, the president of the Oahu Veterans Council which operates the veterans center. "Many of them of course passed. We consider the flags not only an entrance to our facility, but a sentinel over those who have gone before us, to take those down is kind of slap to them as well."

If you have any information call the Veterans Center at 422-4000.
