Crews searching for missing man at Boiling Pots

HILO, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) – Big Island first responders are searching for a California man who went missing Tuesday while swimming with friends at Boiling Pots on the Wailuku River outside Hilo. 24-year-old cruise ship worker Ryan Ritzel of Soquel, California was swimming with five co-workers just before 2:00 PM when he attempted to swim to the opposite side of the river and disappeared.

A helicopter aided ground crews Tuesday afternoon searching along the banks of the river. The water was too rough for a water search and rescue efforts were suspended Tuesday night after sunset. The search continued Wednesday.

Boiling Pots is a succession of big pools connected by underground flows or cascades whose waters roll and bubble as if boiling. The hexagonal columns that line the pools were formed by the slow cooling of basalt lava.

Ritzel is described as Caucasian, 5'9" tall with a slim build, short brown hair and blue eyes. He was wearing white and blue swimming trunks when he was last seen. Police ask that anyone with information on his whereabouts call the Police Department's non-emergency line at 935-3311.
